We’ve come to equate online shopping with Amazon. In fact, it’s become the go-to one-stop-shop of the masses. Amazon has built a trusted name for itself, and its swift delivery and seemingly endless supplies of just about everything make it hard to beat. Amazon, however, is not above cutting corners to increase profits, and a recent issue related to AmazonBasics is causing significant concern. If a damaged or otherwise faulty consumer product leaves you injured, a Boca Raton products liability attorney can help.
For Example
CNN reports that a young man who’d purchased a workaday USB cord from AmazonBasics awoke to find his desk chair in flames. The man was burned in the process of removing the chair from his home, and the fire marshal at the scene determined that the fire was ultimately started by a short circuit in the USB cord in question, which was melded to the chair. The cord was an AmazonBasics model.
Getting Down to Basics
In order to compete with the name brands that we all turn to for home purchases and the like, Amazon created AmazonBasics, which is one of its private labels. This line of products was launched in 2009 and is similar in concept to budget stores selling their own store-brand items that mimic other popular products (Target’s Up&Up is a prime example). It’s not enough, apparently, to outsell everyone else – Amazon wanted to throw its own line of products into the mix – and the results have also been mixed. AmazonBasics consists of budget-friendly products in all the following categories:
- Electronic devices, including that USB cord
- Home goods
- Household appliances
- Office accessories
For obvious reasons, Amazon promotes its AmazonBasics heavily, and it’s seen a lot of success with many of the items in the lineup (with high customer ratings). With many of us turning to online shopping more than ever before – as a result of the global pandemic – AmazonBasics has seen an uptick in sales.
Less Positive Reviews
On the flip side, many consumers have launched complaints to federal regulators about their concerns as they relate to some of Amazon’s so-called basics. Further, since 2006, there have been more than 1,500 Amazon reviews specifically warning others about AmazonBasics that start fires, explode, smoke, melt, or are otherwise dangerous. Just as Amazon is trying to insert itself as competition for those major brands we have all come to know and trust, many of its customers are saying not so fast.
